Episode 108: Newport Mosque - Glenn Murcutt
Jan Henderson explores The Australia Islamic Centre, designed by architects Glenn Murcutt and Hakan Elevli, in Melbourne’s Newport.
In this week’s episode, Jan talks with renowned architect Glenn Murcutt at his exhibition on The Australian Islamic Centre, which is being held at the Nation Gallery of Victoria. The building sets out to pave the way for a new architectural language in contemporary Australian Islam, challenging our preconceptions of historical architectural typologies and aesthetics. The Australian Islamic Centre still respects the fundamental principles and requirements of Islamic architecture, but Murcutt has gone beyond the semiotic language of a traditional mosque through carrying out a progressive vision for architecture as a tool for intercultural development and dialogue.
The public are welcome to visit Glenn Murcutt and Hakan Elevli’s free exhibition “Architecture of Faith” at the National Gallery of Victoria.
