Episode 50: Women - Rebecca Naughtin

In this new series, Women in Architecture, Jan Henderson examines the issues facing women in the profession, and whether there really is a glass ceiling!

In this fourth program in the series, Jan talks with young Melbourne sole practitioner Rebecca Naughtin. Rebecca graduated from RMIT in 2004 after a somewhat stop start academic life. She became registered in 2007 and began her involvement in the Institute in 2008 as a member of the Education Committee.

In 2008, Rebecca formed Allen Naughtin Architects with Bruce Allen, a multidisciplinary practice specialising in complex residential and commercial projects. After 5 years at Allen Naughtin, Rebecca formed Rebecca Naughtin Architect with a desire to promote architecture to the broader community and to sell architecture as being accessible to all.

Rebecca has been an examiner for the Architects Registration Board of Victoria since 2007, and is a National Program of Assessment (NPrA) Monitor. She is an excellent role model for other young emerging architects through her involvement with the Australian Institute of Architects activities as she sits on the Education Committee, the VIC Chapter Women in Architecture Constructive Mentor Program (CMP) and the CMP Advisory panel.

Rebecca has been a CMP mentor for many years and has taken on the role of the CMP convenor. Her contribution to the education of architecture is extensive as she teaches at Monash University in Professional Studies and also is a Co-ordinator, tutor and lecturer for Professional Practice at RMIT.

Rebecca was awarded the Institute’s 2013 Victorian Emerging Architects Prize. This was in acknowledgement that she has upheld excellence in a significant number of areas that is not widely recognised. The Jury appreciated and valued Rebecca on her contribution across the whole range of spaces including the practice of architecture, education and mentoring.
