Episode 51: Women - Clare & Karen from MA


In this new series, Women in Architecture, Jan Henderson examines the issues facing women in the profession, and whether there really is a glass ceiling!

In this fifth program in the series, Jan talks with Melbourne duo Clare McAllister and Karen Alcock from MA Architects.

Clare places a strong emphasis on the critical role of design in architectural practice. Prior to the establishment of MAA, Clare was a founding director of Neometro Architects and spent 20 years helping establish the firm as a leader in multi-unit residential design. Clare has participated in a number of forums promoting design excellence, including guest lecturing at universities and conferences. She has also been a juror for the AIA awards. Clare has an interest in Environmentally Sustainable Design and has gained certification as a Greenstar Accredited Professional.

Karen established MAA with Clare after 10 years working together as co-directors of Neometro Architects. Karen and Clare work collaboratively on all projects and in addition to a strong design focus, Karen also brings to the practice strengths in construction detailing, coordinating project documentation and delivery and practice management. Karen has been involved in a number of AIA committees, has been a juror for the AIA awards, and has currently completed a 3 year turn on the Building Advisory Council (BAC). Karen also supports the ongoing development of the profession of architecture and is an examiner for the Architects Registration Board of Victoria.
